Worms are scared of moles. If you can convince them that a mole is coming they will scatter out of the way — in the process some will crawl out on the surface.
This is a great standby and one of the best ways of gathering the smaller worms. I use a strong bankstick when I'm coarse fishing or a whittled bit of bankside debris. Except in drought conditions you never need to be short of a worm.
Take a sharp stick, push it into the ground so that the point is well below the surface. Wiggle it back and forth. After a few minutes move to a new position about a yard away and then to a third, keep your holes close together. This brings the worms to the surface. Do not try and pick them up until they have come clean out of their holes.
Unless stated otherwise: Everything in this site refers to fishing in the British Isles and similar northern European waters.
